Florida ed commish Gerard Robinson in town tonight

From the Times Union, By Khristopher J. Brooks

Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson will host a community forum Tuesday at Jacksonville City Hall to discuss public education in Florida.

Donnie Horner, Mayor Alvin Brown's education commissioner, will join Robinson during the event scheduled for 6 p.m. Robinson is asking for local parents, teachers and general community members to attend.

Tuesday's event is part of Robinson's "Conversation with the Commissioner" series of forums. He already has made stops in Palatka, Tampa and Boca Raton. After Jacksonville, he will go to Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers and St. Petersburg.

In a letter to the Tallahassee Democrat, Robinson said 2011 and 2012 were successful years for education in Florida, adding that he "continues to push ahead with innovative education reforms because we want our diverse learners to reach higher and be prepared for college, career and life.

"Florida's teachers, parents and education leaders may have different ideas about the pace of
change, but we have the same objective — to provide a world-class education to our students," Robinson wrote.

Robinson and his staff previously scheduled his Jacksonville forum for May 28.

However, inclement weather from Tropical Storm Beryl forced organizers to reschedule.
